Building your Portfolio

It's A Story About You.

When you are applying to game development jobs, there is one thing that is more important than your resume or your cover letter: your portfolio.

Your portfolio is a compilation of your best work. Your portfolio proves to people that you know how to do the things that you have included on your resume, and it also gives studios an understanding of your accomplishments and creative sensibilities.

The portfolio of an artist will look different to that of a designer or a programmer, but regardless of your specialty, your portfolio is the single most important component of your job application.

Here are some tips for getting your portfolio off the ground:

If You Can, Host Your Own Portfolio Website:

It is best to have your own site that you can customize to showcase your portfolio exactly the way you want it. If you do not know how to build your own website, then you can always try asking a friend for help, or you can use a website template like Wix or Squarespace.

Include Impressive Projects:

You may be tempted to make your portfolio seem larger by including every project you have ever worked on. This will bog down your portfolio. Your portfolio will be cluttered, and the less impressive projects might hurt your chances of getting a job. Quality over quantity.

Lead with Your Best Projects:

Your portfolio needs to be captivating. Don’t worry about making it chronological. If somebody is skimming your portfolio, you want them to be most likely see your best project.

Stay on Task:

If you are applying for design, then don’t include content in your portfolio about your music skills. Keep your portfolio focused on the job you are hoping to get. If you are applying to several different disciplines within the field of game development, then you will probably need to have separate portfolios for each one.

Search for Examples Online:

Look online for portfolios to get a sense for what works and what doesn’t and to inspire the design and layout of your portfolio.
